The Oscar Cocktail is May 16th Drink of the Day!!
The first Acadamy Award celebration was held at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood at a luncheon on this date in 1929. Two Hundred and Seventy people were at the festivities. Fifteen statuettes were handed out, honoring directors, writers and actors for the 1927/1928 season. The winners were announced three months prior to this so there were no surprises. Today, over 100 countries see this ceremony live on television.
The post-award celebration was at the Mayfair Hotel. The cost for admission was five dollars to get in and be part of the party. Not that this price was inexpensive back in those days. Try to get in any of the post-parties now!
There are several people who claim responsibility for giving the award the name “Oscar”. The first time it is known to be named this is 1931, two years after the first Acadamy Award Ceremony took place.
To honor this date, I’m introducing a drink that bears the name of the award. I found this recipe on DrinksMixer.com.
Oscar Cocktail

1 oz. Vodka
3/4 oz. Cherry Brandy
1 Dash Grenadine
1 oz. Pineapple Juice
1 oz. Orange Soda
