One of the most historic memories of the Old West is the Pony Express that would deliver mail from St. Joseph, MO., where telegraph service ended, to Sacramento, CA in eight days. Prior to this service, people would have to wait several weeks, even several months to receive letters from the east. On this day, in 1860, the first successful delivery on this route began. Stations on the route were roughly 10 miles apart, so the riders could be fresh for the trip. On this route were several areas of danger, with Indians and robbers always needed to be watched for.

Just a year and a half later, the first telegram line to San Francisco, CA was installed making this service dispensable. It would soon dissolve due to never making a dime. In 1992, the complete trail that was used was preserved and is now part of the National Trails and Parks, with some of it now part of US Routes such as Rte 36 in Missouri

In memory of all the brave riders that rode this trail for the eighteen months of it’s existence, I’d like to introduce to you a drink named after it. Brain MacGregor of San Francisco, California is credited for coming up with this drink.
