The Red Baron Cocktail is April 21st Drink of the Day!!
During World War I, the battle for the skies of Europe were being won by the Germans early on. This was due, in large part, to one of Germany’s pilots, Baron Manfred von Richthofen. Better known as the “Red Baron”, he was feared by ally troops, due to his air prowess. He was credited for shooting down eighty planes and was gunning for more when he was finally brought down for good on this day in 1918.
Early on, historians believed that another pilot was responsible for firing the fatal shot that ended the life of this German pilot. However, forensics has found that it was actually the bullet from a foot soldier, probably from an Austrailian Troop that was on the ground nearby, that shot his weapon at the plane when they were dog fighting close to the ground that did this deed.
The Red Baron landed his plane nearby Vaux-Sur-Somme, France, and died from his injury. As was the tradition in this war, he was buried with full honors by his enemies.
In recognition of this flying ace, I’ve found a drink that’s named after him.
