The Sazerac Cocktail is January 5th Drink of the Day

Watching the Sugar Bowl the other night got me thinking about all the tradition of drink making in New Orleans. If you want to find a cocktail that has withstood the test of time, look no further than this fine drink. It is the true whiskey imbiber that will find a place that serves this to feel the past, and can truly say they’ve experienced this great town and it’s extrordinarily colorful history.

Introduced as the signature drink at the Sazerac Coffee House in 1859, (hence it’s name), its history can only be described as acceptional. Once touching the glass to your lips and experiencing the taste yourself, you will see the drink matches this description very well!

Due to Prohibition and the banning of Absinthe until just recently, you may have to do some searching to enjoy it’s flavor. It’ll only make the experience that much better when you’re successful! Enjoy!

Sazerac Cocktail

2 oz. Rye Whiskey
3/4 oz. Simple Syrup
2 Dashes Peychaud Bitters
Absinthe
Twist of Lemon

Method: Chill an Old-Fashioned Glass by filling with ice and setting it to the side. In a seperate mixing glass, pour the simple syrup, rye whiskey, and Peychaud Bitters, then add ice. Stir. In the original glass of ice, dump the ice, then pour in a small amount of absinthe. Swirl around the glass, then dump it out. This will leave a nice residued layer in the glass. Take the glass with the mixture and strain it into the chilled glass. Take a lemon rind and twist it over the drink to allow the oily essence to spritz onto the contents. Rim the glass with the twist, then discard the twist.
