On this day, in 1850, Nathanial Hawthorne published his most accomplished masterpiece, “The Scarlett Letter”. If you are unfamiliar with this story, which I find highly doubtful since we were all forced to read it in high school, it’s about a young lady who his labled for adultry and made to where an embroidered “A” on her dress. Set in the 1600s in Boston, it’s a story that tells the religious viewpoints of the time. It also shows that we are all human and do things that may be against the beliefs of the masses.

To celebrate this classic, I found a drink that bears its name. This is a drink that is considered a house drink at Sugarcane in Houston, TX. Sugarcane is known for coming up with cocktails that are organic and unique. This drink does not let you down on either. If you like the smokiness of a good bourbon, you have to give this drink a try.

The one thing about this drink is that you may have to order in a bottle of Crism Organic Hibiscus Liqueur via mail. This is not that common of an ingredient. But, who says you can’t build up your bar with exotic liqueurs. However, if you don’t want to venture out to find this rare product, you can replace it with Campari. The notes of this may be somewhat different. But, it will save you some time in locating the other.

The Scarlet Letter
1 1/2 oz. Bourbon Whiskey
1/2 oz. Crism Organic Hibiscus Liqueur
1/2 oz. St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
Juice of 1/2 lemon

Method: Take the bourbon and both liqueurs and pour into a shaker glass with ice. Gently shake the ingredients and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Squeeze lemon juice on top of the cocktail.
