The Vesuvius Cocktail is August 24th Drink of the Day!!
Mount Vesuvius is the only volcano on mainland Italy to have eruped in the last one-hundred years. The last time it erupted was in 1944. Vesuvius has a history of violent explosions and is considered one of the world’s most dangerous volcanos due to its proximity to a dense population of people, (3 Million). It has erupted several times since it’s most famous and talked about eruption in 79AD. It was such an intense eruption that it completely destroyed two cities: Pompeii and Herculaneum. The two towns were covered by lava and wouldn’t be discovered until the 18th century. It also shows how fast this eruption must have happened due to the way the people of these towns were found, covered in the lava itself and the shapes of them preserved until found hundreds of years later.
To remember this day, I’ve found a drink that uses grappa as a main ingredient. That in itself is worth the try.
Vesuvius Cocktail
1 oz. Grappa Brandy
1 oz. Benedictine
1/4 oz. Triple Sec
Juice of 1/2 Lemon
Method: Pour all ingredients into a shaker glass filled with ice. Stir well then strain into a cocktail glass.
