The Zombie is February 28th Drink of the Day!
This is one of those drinks that has stood the test of time. Invented by Donn Beach of Don the Beachcomer Restaurant fame in the 1930s, this drink is surely not for the weak hearted.
This drink hit the top of its popularity after it was showed off at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It was so popular, in fact, that the drink has a glass named after it!
I am mentioning this drink today in honor of the show, M*A*S*H, which aired its last show on this date in 1983. In Season 3, episode 17, Trapper John McIntyre orders a Zombie at the officers club and states, “…and keep them coming until I turn into one.” M*A*S*H is considered as one of the most popular TV series in the history of television. In fact, when the last show was aired, it was at the time the most watched TV show in television history.
When you begin drinking these, be sure to have a way home. These are very potent drinks and can get you in trouble in a hurry.
Zombie
1 part white rum
1 part gold rum
1 part dark rum
1 part apricot brandy
1 part pineapple juice
1 part papaya juice
1/2 part 151 rum
Dash of Grenadine
Method: In a shaker with ice, add all ingredints except the 151 rum. Shake well and strain into a zombie glass filled with ice. Top with 151 rum. If you so wish, ignite drink with a lighter. The 151 rum will allow it to lite. If you do this, be sure to blow out the flame before taking a drink. Garnish with a pineapple slice and maraschino cherry.
