Here’s a nice weekend starter for you; one that will give your sense of smell a nice workout to go along with the flavor. Green Chartreuse is an herbal liqueur that gives this cocktail some aromatic life and seems to play well with the Irish whiskey and sweet vermouth. Chartreuse has been around since the French Carthusian monks began making it for medicinal purposes in 1737. By itself, this liqueur has a medicine flavor. Yes, the aroma is there. But, the flavor just doesn’t sit well with many people, hence the reason we have probably seen this become a rarity on the bar shelves the last few decades. However, with the proper measures and some fine tuning to find your own taste, this cocktail is a great sipper as an aperitif, or even the last cocktail before calling it a night.

The Tipperary Cocktail originally showed up in a 1916 bar book entitled, “Recipes for Mixed Drinks” by Hugo Ensslin, a bartender at the Wallick Hotel in New York City. He calls for equal parts of the three ingredients: green chartreuse, Irish whiskey, and sweet vermouth. Then, in 1922, Harry McElhorne, (yes, the same Harry that would open the world famous Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, France), added this in his book, “ABC of Mixing Cocktail”. However, he would change the measures to where the prominent liquor in the cocktail was the Irish whiskey.

I have changed this a little for it to be what fit well for me. Feel free to do the same. Remember, I am only giving you the canvas and the paint. You will need to give it your touches to make it a great beverage for you, personally. Enjoy and cheers!
