Tom Collins is April 11th Drink of the Day!!
“Has anyone seen Tom Collins?”
It is said that back in the 1870s in New York City, there was a big joke going around about a man named Tom Collins. People would go around and ask if anyone had seen him. However, this was not a true person. Don’t know why someone started this, and what the big joke was about, but it happened about the time Jerry Thomas, the father of American Bartending owned his bar in New York City.
Jerry thought it was interesting enough to name a drink out of it in his book, “The Bartender’s Guide”, published in 1876. Mr. Thomas is known for being the first to write a bar recipe manual. He was known also for coming up with some cocktails that have stood the test of time. This would be one of those.
1 1/2 oz. Gin
Juice of 1 1/2 lemons
1/2 oz. Simple Syrup
Club Soda
Method: In a shaker glass filled with ice, pour in the measured amount of gin. Squeeze in three halves of lemon juice into the glass. Add the simple syrup, cap off with a tin and shake well. Strain into a collins glass filled with ice, then top off with soda. Garnish with a couple maraschino cherries and a half wheel of orange.
