The Twisted Lemonade is February 27th Drink of the Day!!
Today I am going to give you two recipes to the same cocktail. One will be the quick and easy version, the other will be one you will have to work on getting what you want. The difference in the two will be that the latter will be made with fresh ingredients. In fact, I will give you a recipe for making your own grenadine in this blog. As I have said to you all along, it is always best to use fresh ingredients if you have the time to do so.
I am going to speak my mind a little due to what I see out there with some of these craft bars that are cropping up out there. Who ever thought that taking twenty minutes to get a cocktail at a public bar was a good business idea? Are you kidding me?! Come on folks - yes, it’s nice to have fresh ingredients for any cocktail. But the overhead it takes to do this in a public establishment is not business wise. If you have prepped your bar before your shift to make these nice and refreshing cocktails, that’s great. But, to prep as you go and have a customer wait more than three - five minutes for a drink, you might as well consider your business a lost cause because you may have some curiosity seekers at first. The once busy establishment will slowly dwindle and you will find yourself looking for a new concept. Keep the prep as you go philosophy for your home parties.
With that off my chest, here are two ways of making this drink:
Twisted Lemonade (Easy Version)
2 oz. Strawberry Infused Vodka
1/2 oz. Sour Mix
2 Splashes of Grenadine
Method: In a mixing glass filled with ice, pour in all the ingredients to measure. Shake well, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a half wheel of lemon on the rim of the cocktail glass.
Twisted Lemonade (One you will have to work for)
Three Strawberries
Juice of one Lemon
1/2 oz. Fresh Grenadine - (Take 1 cup of sugar to 1 cup of water and heat over the stove on simmer until the sugar dissolves with the water to create simple syrup. Scoop out about two tablespoons of pomegranate pulp and drop it into the simple syrup, leaving it on the stove to simmer for another fifteen minutes. Do not allow this to boil. Stir occasionally. Allow to cool for a couple minutes. Strain this, using a mesh strainer and funnel it into a container of your choice, preferably one that you can use for your bar. Once cooled at room temperature, place in the refrigerator. This will only be good for about 24 hours).
2 oz. Vodka
Method: Take the strawberries and cut off the top leafy part and discard. Cut each strawberry in four parts and drop them into the mixing glass. Squeeze in the juice of one lemon and discard the lemon remnants after doing so. Add 1 oz. of the vodka. Muddle together these ingredients, pulverizing until you have a consistent mash. Add the other 1 oz. of vodka and fill with ice. Add the fresh grenadine. Cap off with a tin and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. If you want to not have floating pieces of strawberry in your cocktail, in addition to the traditional hawthorn strainer, use a mesh strainer to double strain into the glass. Garnish with a half wheel of lemon.
