Rye whiskey is becoming my favorite mixing spirit for one strong fact. It blends well with many things when done so when the secondary ingredients are done sparingly. The rye flavor of the whiskey tends to jump right out at you, and shares the stage nicely with other ingredients, bringing out their finest attributes as well. Here is a cocktail that is a great example as to what I am talking about. This is another whiskey cocktail that will sway you in trying out new things and will become an instant favorite during the dog days of summer. A nice evening beverage to enjoy on the deck, reacquainting yourself with old friends.

Now that we are seeing some better weather, it’s time to think about the outdoors. Maybe, instead of turning on the television, it could be a nice night to relax outside, sitting and thinking about the plans you want to put together for the coming months. Or, you may want to not think about anything at all; releasing all thoughts about the day, closing your eyes and going into complete bliss. Here’s the beverage to help you do just that. It’s time to exhale.

Ward 8 Cocktail

2 oz. Rye Whiskey

1/2 oz. Simple Syrup

Juice of 1/2 Lemon

2 Splashes of Grenadine

Method: In a mixing glass with ice, pour in the whiskey and simple syrup to measure. Squeeze in the juice from half a lemon, discarding the lemon after doing so. Add a couple splashes of grenadine. Cap off with a tin and shake well. Strain into a ten ounce wine glass filled half way with ice. Garnish with a flag consisting of a half-wheel of orange, a maraschino cherry, and a half-wheel of lime.
