Drink of the Day: Bourbon Crusta

Hope you all are enjoying your work week.  We are near the end of this one, with the weekend in clear view.  I’ve decided to give you a little bit of education with your drink today.

This is not a cocktail I am introducing you to today.  I am introducing a “crusta”.  Believe it or not, this type of beverage had a category of its own in the mid-1800’s.  Jerry Thomas, the man considered by many as the Father of Modern Bartending, mentioned in the first bar recipe publication in 1862 that this was the new up and coming thing.  The combination of citrus and bitters in any cocktail at the time was considered a crusta and not a cocktail.  Combining the citrus to a cocktail was ahead of it’s time back in those days, so it was considered it’s own unique thing.  As you know, in modern times, everything using a mixer of any sort or combines with two or more beverages has been given the generic term, “cocktail”.

The first example of a crusta was made with the base ingredient being cognac.  Today, I am introducing the bourbon version of the cocktail.  A very relaxing thirst quenching beverage, this will become the true whiskey imbiber’s go-to when they want a little more than their typical whiskey on the rocks.  The citrus and bitters do a fine job of hiding the bite of the liquor, while bringing out the true back flavor of the spirit that coincide well with the added ingredients.

So, let’s take a stroll back in time to enjoy one of history’s hidden gems.  Hope you enjoy and have a great Thursday, everyone!
